While shooting for their production "Crowned" here in Columbus, OH, Elucidate Productions managed to steal from three of the local rental houses in the area, including our own. Once we got wind that they were not returning gear, another rental house and ourselves started communicating with each other to corroborate the information the production was feeding us. What was often the case is that they would purposefully miss the return window and then provide bad information about the progress of their return. We had gotten a more substantially expensive order of equipment back from them after really pressing for a return and threatening police involvement, but when we did the barcodes to the cameras and lenses had all been removed. We cut them off from another rental after this (with the other rental house already notifying us that gear had been stolen from them at that point). This is when they got a local 19-20 y/o kid (Daniel Tsegaye, a local seinior student at BGSU) to come in half an hour before we close to rent 2x Fx6's for his "senior thesis". COI and paperwork checked out, and my rental team grilled him over details of the shoot, but he held firm. Immediately after receiving the equipment, he gave it over to a waiting Jymeir Mitchell in an adjacent parking lot, where he and an actor on the production, Jenna Bartley, proceeded to take ours and another rental house's gear to pawn shops in our area (as corroborated by the local authorities in the report). Production has been unresponsive and we fear they might be trying to pull a similar scam in other cities. Some of the equipment was purchased back by us from the pawn shops, but unfortunately there were items that we and the other production houses were unable to recuperate. Maria Seibert with "thetalenttour.com" is also mentioned as a "pay to play" acting coach with similarly shady business practices the more we dug into the rest of the production, and seems to be intimately involved with this production company. Sandra Devaughn who is a producer with Elucidate also attempted to rent gear after all of this transpired, but we were tipped off by the insurance provider in addition to DeVaughn being listed on their production company website (before it was later taken down). As mentioned above, we did recouperate some of our gear from the pawn shops at a cost, so what the itemized items are still out and missing, but the big ticket items like the Sony FX6 and lens had been recouped.
